A Lone is a girl who wishes to be a Guide but is unable to attend regular meetings. Reasons may include:
|
distance - she may live too far away |
| no Guide Unit in her town or district | |
| local Unit doesn't meet her needs (place, time, age group may not be suitable) | |
| poor health - at home or in hospital | |
| boarding school, studies, tertiary training | |
| family travelling, exchange student, family working overseas | |
| social and welfare reasons |
SA Lones are part of Girl Guides South Australia which is a branch of Girl Guides Australia. Guides Australia is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
More than 10 million members in over 140 countries make the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) one of the world's five largest youth organisations and non-formal educators.

A Lone receives the same training and adventure as all Guides, except it is nearly all done by correspondence.
Each Lone Unit has its own Leader who keeps in touch with her Guides mainly by letter. They also communicate by telephone, fax, and email.
Each girl receives regular letters from her Leader and through the Unit meeting on paper, is helped with activities and tasks for badges.
In inland Australia, Lones of the Air talk to their Leaders and Guide friends through radio receivers. Whilst Lones of the Air may still exist in other States, South Australian Lones now use satellite computer technology.
Lones enjoy the fun and friendship of Guiding the world over, including the occasional arranged meeting, camps and gatherings.
